A lecturer's dilemma - to be neutral or not to be neutral (ENG)
2025-05-23 , Room 5 (n.o.t.k)

This workshop is in English
As hbo teachers we teach our students valuable skills, competencies and knowledge. More than within universities, many of these students still need to develop their critical thinking competences. As such there is a (greater) risk to influence their world view. In particular regarding e.g. climate justice, progressive thought and morality. How to deal with this?

As an environmental science lecturer I often discuss topics such as sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and behaviour change with my students. Recently I have also started to address climate justice and distributive justice (which can also be framed as part of climate justice) with my students.

When discussing these themes, I gratefully make use of the many established theories, scientific evidence and news sources on these topics. Nevertheless, there is always a nagging voice in my head that has a honest discussion about the ramifications of my storylines.

By sharing specific theories, evidence and news, am I not shaping the world views of my students? Am I not tinkering with their moral compass? And further, is this a good or bad thing? Or can it even be avoided? Can or should a lecturer be neutral, considering the direction the world is moving in to?

This is a short, open workshop to discuss this dilemma and share suggestions and best practices. Everyone is free to join and add their thoughts to the discussion. I will present a few viewpoints of my own, but am also curious about the experiences of others.
