XR-IT: a software and systems platform for high-fidelity collaboration in the Metaverse. New tools enabling inter-institutional virtual worlds, for education, research and immersive content creation. Preview a live action mocap animated film made simultaneously between studios in three EU countries using XR-IT.
XR-IT has been developed to radically simplify the process of collaboration in shared XR worlds situated across geographically distributed nodes of engagement. It supports the creation and operation of immersive coalesced space by integrating existing computing and specialist XR resources across multiple locations into a seamless cohabited world for creation, education and research.
XR-IT enables remote engagement in complex XR environments through the use of a distributed computing model that supports local instancing of games engines (Unreal, and Unity), and low-latency geographic distribution of mocap data, audio/video streams, camera parameters, facial capture data, etc. using a secure global virtual LAN model of connectivity.
A recent test case, using XR-IT to create a live motion-capture generated film, working simultaneously with actors and crew in studios in the Netherlands, Finland and Germany, will be presented.
XR-IT was developed in the Trans Realties Lab (TRL) at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) with financial support of the European Union’s European Media and Immersion Lab programme and Horizon Europe.
Dr Ian Biscoe - a serial technology entrepreneur with start-up experience in Europe and the USA across the fields of engineering, aerospace, and entertainment. Ian is currently Professor Transdisciplinary Design Networks at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) where his Trans Realities Lab (TRL) is investigating applications of real-time collaborative networked XR in education, design, production and research. Ian leads multiple research programmes in the TRL, including the Horizon Europe / EMIL funded XR-IT (eXtended Reality - Intraverse Tookit), a software and systems framework for distanced collaboration in high-fidelity Metaverse / Distributed Spatial Environments.
Through his arts practice, Studio Biscoe, Ian fuses approaches from many fields of technology, performing and visual arts to create networked performances employing low-latency networks and coalesced space.
