Carly Robinson
Carly Robinson is the Director of Open Research at SPARC. She serves as the strategic lead with U.S. federal agencies and institutions in supporting open research and open infrastructure policy development and implementation, as well as for the U.S. Repository Network (USRN). She has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Atmospheric Chemistry from the University of Colorado, and a B.S. in Applied Physics from Michigan Technological University.
Prior to SPARC, Carly worked for nearly 10 years in the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). She last served as Assistant Director for Information Products and Service and as a representative on the White House National Science and Technology Council’s Subcommittee on Open Science, providing PID subject matter expertise and co-chairing subgroups on both persistent identifiers and open science infrastructure.

As PIDs become essential infrastructure for open research, funder compliance, and scholarly discovery, shared standards are more important than ever. In this session, you will learn how a National Information Standards Organization working group is turning community best practices into a consensus U.S. standard designed for global interoperability, for which many key systems are already largely compliant. This session offers a practical look at the core attributes of robust PIDs and PID systems—uniqueness, persistence, resolution, metadata, interoperability, governance, sustainability, security, and integrity—and the objective criteria behind them. You’ll get insight into the standards development process, leave with a clearer understanding of how these characteristics balance moving the field forward with real-world implementation, and learn how this emerging standard can help PID providers and users alike evaluate, strengthen, and future-proof this critical research infrastructure.
PIDs are increasingly important for repository workflows. Primary challenges for PID integration into open-source repository platforms include the ability to coordinate many moving pieces globally and identifying who might be responsible for moving any given development forward. In this session, you will learn how PIDs can be used in repository platforms, and a case study example for how PID advocacy work is moving forward for DSpace, an open source, community-driven repository software used by thousands of organizations across the globe.
