As the understanding of PIDs has grown – the community – institutions, funders, policy-makers – are looking beyond the identifiers, to realise their systemic value. Part of this value lies in the metadata associated with the identified objects and the way these link to each other. The possibilities to make connections between entities across the system, especially where information about the relationships is included and open, promise opportunities for greater insights, evaluation and so - more strategic decisions and better informed policy.

In this session, speakers will briefly report recent developments regarding improving metadata capture and availability at the point of PID registration, and provide recommendations for action for publishers, funders and institutions. This will be followed by a semi-structured discussion with participants, aimed at exploring and reflecting on implementation opportunities. We seek to co-create actionable pathways for sharing rich, open metadata with the community. In this session, we wish to explore how realistic these approaches are in the view of PIDFest participants.

will discuss Crossref activities to enable rich metadata registration among its 25,000 members and the process of community-led metadata development.

Bianca Kramer, Executive Director of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, will talk about policy discussions about adoption of mandates for open research information disclosure, including use of PIDs.

Hans de Jonge, Director of Open Science NL (Dutch Research Council) and co-coordinator of the Barcelona Declaration working group on funding metadata, will talk about the action plan on improving the availability of funding metadata developed by the participants of the Funding Metadata Roundtable last October and progress that has been made since.

Ludo Waltman, Scientific Director and Professor of Quantitative Science Studies at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), Leiden University, will talk about prioritising the availability of open publication metadata in negotiations between libraries and publishers. Ludo will discuss the ongoing efforts made by a joint task force of the Barcelona Declaration and OA2020, of which Ludo is one of the coordinators. PIDs such as DOIs, ORCIDs and ROR IDs play a crucial role in these efforts.

The discussion that follows will be guided by three key questions:

1. What actions can publishers, funders, institutions and libraries take to improve metadata capture and availability?
2. Where is collective action needed, and where can individual organisations take action tomorrow?
3. What is holding organisations back, and what can be done to overcome these barriers? How can the PID community contribute to this?

We anticipate that, beyond the reporting phase of the session, the panellists will write up and share the discussion outcomes in a blog post.
