When the National PID Centre at the National Library of Technology launched in January 2023, awareness of PIDs in the Czech Republic was still relatively low, and many relevant stakeholders across the research community did not yet recognize their practical value. Looking back at the three years of raising awareness and supporting the adoption of PIDs in the Czech research environment, you can learn what worked in the development of centralized PID support services. More importantly, you might benefit from the challenges the Czech PID Centre has encountered and, in some cases, continues to deal with. While some of these are specific to the Czech context, key lessons learned from, e.g, operating the national ORCID and DOI consortia along with insights from conducting a cost-benefit analysis as well as a national PID adoption survey can offer valuable inspiration - or a cautionary tale - applicable to your local context.
The presentation will familiarize you with the experience of the Czech National PID Centre, which started operating as part of the National Library of Technology on January 1, 2023. Developing the Czech national PID support services could not be imagined without access to and building on experiences from others all over the world. So this contribution, in turn, aims to help you learn from the experiences in the Czech Republic, including hard-learned lessons about what worked and what did not, and what should have been done differently, so that you can avoid the sometimes challenging obstacles encountered in this case.
You will learn how the Czech PID services mainly focus on the running of the ORCID and DOI consortia (collective forms of accessing PID services), national ROR support, but also promoting and supporting the use of other PIDs, endeavor, sometimes with success, sometimes with difficulties in promoting awareness and use of PIDs in the Czech research environment.
Some of the specific challenges that you will get insight into include:
Overcoming reservations and hesitation of institutions to start or expand using PIDs and to integrate them into their workflows, even when provided with financial support from the National PID Centre.
Putting the matter of PIDs and their support on the agenda of research institutions, as well as government bodies, funders, and other relevant stakeholders involved in research activities, and raising awareness of the value and best practices around PIDs, even when their use is not always enforceable or seen as a priority.
Determining priorities and targeting of support of PID services using external cost-benefit analysis and a national survey to map the existing situation and plan future milestones that are realistic and bring a return on the invested resources.
