Building an Automated DOI Check System for FSU's ORCID Integration - A Use Case

Florida State University recently completed an integration between ORCID and our home-grown information management system FEAS (Faculty Expertise & Advancement System). Previously, FSU created an integration that allowed users to move their data from ORCID to FEAS, the recent project completed the two-way integration so that users could move data from FEAS to ORCID, as well as creating a DOI check to ensure that data is as accurate as possible when making it publicly accessible in ORCID.

Our aim for this project initially was to write DOIs to FEAS records to eliminate entry errors. Many records in FEAS are missing DOIs, and because of the varied nature of work types in FEAS, some records don’t include a DOI field. We ultimately decided trying to add DOIs to FEAS records would be too complicated for the varied nature of the work of FSU faculty while we were also completing the two-way integration, but we also wanted to ensure the accuracy of DOIs when transferring them to ORCID.

The library partnered with FDA (Office of Faculty Development and Advancement) and IR (Institutional Research) to build a DOI check system using Snowflake and open data that catches incorrect DOIs before they are uploaded to ORCID. Several levels of validation are conducted between FEAS and Snowflake using open data to ensure the articles match and that DOIs are being corrected for the appropriate publication and author. This process captures only a fraction of the total number of articles in FEAS but this system is replicable for your institution to validate PID data. There are ongoing discussions at FSU about using the open PID data used to validate DOIs to suggest publications to researchers, eliminating the need for scholars to manually enter information themselves.
