Do you rely on ORCID, DOI or ROR to connect research information across systems, but still encounter missing affiliations and incomplete metadata?
In this session you will discover results from the Dutch Open Research Information Monitor, a national initiative that analyses how persistent identifiers are actually used across the research information ecosystem.
The monitor compares metadata across CRIS systems, OpenAlex, OpenAIRE and Crossref to identify gaps in PID coverage, metadata completeness and open licensing.
Using real use cases from universities and research funders, the monitor reveals where PIDs work well, where connections break, and what interventions could improve the ecosystem.
You will gain practical insights into:

- where gaps appear in ORCID, ROR usage
- which interventions can strengthen connected research information
Do you depend on persistent identifiers to connect research information across systems, but still encounter missing ORCIDs, incomplete affiliations or inconsistent metadata?
Many infrastructures assume that PIDs solve these problems automatically. In reality, connections between research outputs, researchers and institutions often remain incomplete.
In this session you will explore the Dutch Open Research Information Monitor, developed within the PID-to-Portal project. The monitor analyzes how persistent identifiers function in practice across the research information ecosystem.
The monitor combines open research information sources such as OpenAlex, OpenAIRE and Crossref with institutional research information systems to assess:
- PID coverage
- metadata completeness
- openness of research metadata
- consistency of identifiers across systems
Using real use cases from Dutch universities and research funders, the project identifies where PID connections succeed and where they break down.
You will see examples of monitoring dashboards that reveal gaps such as:
- missing ORCID identifiers for authors
- missing or inaccurate ROR identifiers for affiliations
- coverage of research outputs across sources
- unclear licensing for research metadata reuse
Beyond identifying problems, the project also explores interventions that improve the research information ecosystem. These range from improving publisher metadata deposits to strengthening institutional workflows and open infrastructure services.
By the end of the session you will better understand:
- how PID ecosystems can be monitored at national scale
- where the biggest barriers to connected research information occur
- how coordinated community interventions can improve PID adoption and metadata quality
This session contributes to the PIDfest theme “Keeping Knowledge Connected” by showing how monitoring helps strengthen the connections between people, institutions, outputs and infrastructures.
Maurice Vanderfeesten works at the intersection of research information infrastructure, open science and innovation. As Innovation Manager Research Services at the University Library of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he develops services for Open Science, scholarly communication and research intelligence.
He also acts as a strategic advisor on Open Research Information at SURF, working on initiatives that strengthen open research information infrastructures and help connect information about Dutch publicly funded research in the public domain.
Maurice studied Information Sciences at Utrecht University and has worked across the Dutch research infrastructure landscape at SURF, TU Delft and VU Amsterdam, contributing to open access repositories, research data management and metadata standards used in infrastructures such as OpenAIRE.
His current work explores how AI can help make research more readable and accessible, supporting his broader mission to build a shared knowledge commons where scientific knowledge is accessible to everyone, now and for generations to come.
