In this presentation , you will learn how we could revolutionise the way the attribution of credit works for data through citation. The current scholarly communication landscape does not easily support the ability for an author to cite a large number of existing data and other digital objects in their manuscript in a way that enables credit for each object, as well as the provenance needed for transparency and traceability, which is critical for compliance with the Open Science paradigm. Do you think we can resolve this through existing infrastructure? Through the Research Data Alliance, both the former Complex Citation Working Group and the current Complex Citation Implementation Interest Group have been working on a solution that we hope will help authors, journals, repositories and others to use existing infrastructure and standards to build the bridges needed to allow those with the technical skills to visualise and connect the dots that allow you to show the impact of any research artefacts that you collect/generate (samples, software, data, models, etc). You can join us to see how we want to use DOIs as a signpost for PIDs of all forms to enable citation to work for you, make your research transparent and reproducible, and in particular, enable you to report to your funders and your host institutions on the uptake and reuse of your research inputs and outputs.
With over 10 years’ experience managing marine data at the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), part of the National Oceanography Centre, facilitating data flows to international partners. I have processed and worked on managing, ingesting and facilitating data flows in the marine domain for various data types. I have led the management of the BODC Published Data Library for over 5 years, minting domain specific DOIs on data and supporting development of BODC systems as a Product Owner. This led me to discover the Research Data Alliance and my involvement in wider citation and use of PIDs.
