PIDs infrastructure Keeping Knowledge Connected in the AI Era

In the AI era, the explosive growth of science and technology resources and interdisciplinary convergence have posed unprecedented challenges to knowledge infrastructure. Ensuring that massive science and technology resources are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR principles) on a global scale has become a central issue in the development of open science. As the "digital ID card" for digital objects, Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) serve as the critical technical foundation for connecting fragmented knowledge and building a trustworthy research ecosystem.
In this workshop focuses on the opportunities and challenges of PID infrastructure in the AI era, exploring how persistent identifiers empower artificial intelligence to understand and connect scientific knowledge. Representatives from DataCite, South China Botanical Garden, Chinese National Space Data Center and Africa PID Alliance are invited to share practices across different identifier systems and regions


In the AI era, the explosive growth of science and technology resources and interdisciplinary convergence have posed unprecedented challenges to knowledge infrastructure. Ensuring that massive science and technology resources are FAIR on a global scale has become a central issue in the development of open science. As the "digital ID card" for objects, PIDs serve as the critical technical foundation for connecting fragmented knowledge and building a trustworthy research ecosystem.

The CSTR Identification Platform, based on the Chinese national standard "Science and Technology Resource Identification" (CSTR), currently serves over 24 million open-access science and technology resources across 11 categories, including articles, scientific data, large research infrastructures, and species, thereby laying a solid foundation for building an open and interconnected scientific ecosystem.

In the AI era, PID infrastructure faces new opportunities and challenges: On the one hand, the identification and provenance of AI-generated content, as well as the trustworthy governance of training data, enable AI to construct knowledge graphs with multiple resource types; on the other hand, the demand for deep semantic association of cross-modal resources and the pressure of real-time identification for massive dynamic objects are driving accelerated multi-dimensional innovation in PID technology.

This workshop specially invites researchers from DataCite, South China National Botanical Garden, Chinese National Space Data Center and Africa PID Alliance, covering different PIDs systems and researchers from different countries, to share practical wisdom on how to leverage PIDs to achieve interconnection of diverse science and technology resources in AI scenarios, contributing to the promotion of global open integration of science and technology resources.

DataCite is a global community that shares a common goal: to ensure that research outputs and resources are openly available and connected, so that their reuse can advance knowledge across and between disciplines, now and in the future.In this presentation, DataCite will focus on Building Trusted Research Infrastructure for AI-Driven Discovery and share its experience.

South China National Botanical Garden has long been committed to plant diversity conservation and sustainable utilization research. In this presentation, SCNBG will focus on exploring how to utilize CSTR to build a dynamic and sustainable biodiversity knowledge network connecting science and society.

Chinese National Space Data Center (NSSDC) is the only state-level data center in space science in China, promoting standardized governance, high-quality construction and open sharing of data resources in space science. At this presentation, NSSDC will share its practical experiences and perspectives on data curation practices and future outlook regarding Persistent Identifiers (PIDs).

Africa PID Alliance (APA) is the part of the Open Infrastructure program of the Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa). DOCiD is a hybrid digital object identification system led by the Africa PID Alliance. In this presentation APA will focus on Connecting African Research with Asian Open Science Infrastructure, exploring how DOCiD achieves PIDs integration with systems such as CSTR.

Matt Buys is Executive Director of DataCite, a global non-profit organization providing persistent identifier (PID) infrastructure to support open and connected research. He leads the organization’s strategy across community governance, services, and operations, with a focus on strengthening trusted, sustainable, and community-driven scholarly infrastructure serving stakeholders in over 65 countries. 

With over 15 years of experience in the research and scholarly communications ecosystem, Matthew has worked closely with institutions, funders, and international partners to advance open science practices and collaborative infrastructure. 

He is also an active contributor to governance in the open research landscape, serving as Board Chair of the Center for Open Science, Vice Chair of the DOI Foundation, and a board member of FORCE11, supporting global efforts to promote openness, persistence, and trust in research.

Xu Zhoufeng, biodiversity informatics engineer, currently works in South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Pay attention to the application of citizen science, object identification, data science engineering, and AI in the field of biodiversity.

Joy Owango is an internationally recognized leader in Open Science advocacy, research infrastructure development, and scholarly communication in Africa. She is the Executive Director of the Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa), the first Africa-based centre dedicated to strengthening scientists’ skills in scholarly and science communication, enhancing research visibility and impact across the continent.

Owango is also a co-founder of the Africa PID Alliance, a pan-African initiative advancing the adoption and integration of Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) to strengthen research discovery, attribution, and interoperability in African research ecosystems. Through this work, she has championed the development of DOCiD (Digital Object Container Identifier), a federated PID container that links identifiers such as ORCID, ROR, CSTR, Crossref, DataCite, RAiD, and Handle into machine-actionable research objects aligned with FAIR Digital Object principles.

Her work promotes responsible data governance, equitable participation in global research infrastructure.
