Are your repository's PID integrations doing the bare minimum? This session draws on production experience with DSpace, the world's most widely deployed open-source repository platform, to show what ORCID, ROR, and DOI can actually deliver when treated as infrastructure rather than metadata fields.
Most repository managers have all three identifiers in place but have never seen a complete picture of what they unlock day to day. You'll discover how DOIs become a live metadata pipeline via Crossref and OpenAlex, how ORCID powers full researcher entity creation rather than just name disambiguation, how ROR finally brings order to years of affiliation chaos, and how PID-based matching pulls in external data from Scopus and Web of Science without manual intervention.

This session will revolve around Dspace examples - most widely deployed open-source repository platform - but the gap is rarely the software. It's knowing how to wire the pieces together.
You'll discover how the same three identifiers your repository already supports can do work you probably didn't expect. DOIs become a live pipeline: let Crossref and OpenAlex harvest titles, abstracts, funding information, and citation counts - without a cataloguer touching a form. ORCID becomes the foundation for full researcher profile entities - persistent, machine-readable, connected to the researcher's global record. ROR IDs bring order to affiliation chaos: variant spellings, legacy names, merged faculties - normalised and queryable. You'll also see how PID-based matching against Scopus and Web of Science pulls in external data without manual intervention.
But you'll hear where adoption breaks down - and why the most persistent problem isn't technical. It's the lack of awareness that well-implemented PIDs improve data quality not just locally but across the global scholarly record. Every ORCID iD linked, every ROR assigned, every DOI resolved - small acts with outsized effects, invisible when they work.
The central argument: PIDs turn a plain publication repository into a Current Research Information System - not through a platform migration or new procurement, but through the identifiers you already have, deployed with intention.
In 2018-2020, Poland's Ministry of Science and Higher Education made ORCID compulsory for all researchers and mandated its integration into the national repository. The session speaker was the project manager of that repository. Enough time has passed to assess what changed: where effects were lasting, where early wins faded, and what data quality looks like years later - a longitudinal perspective rare in PID case studies.

Małgorzata works at the intersection of open science, research information management, and repository infrastructure, with a practical focus on how national and institutional systems actually get built and used. A recognised DSpace expert and specialist in research evaluation, she has designed and delivered solutions at national scale - previously as part of a state-owned software house building systems for Poland's Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and currently as project manager and client supervisor at PCG Academia. She serves on the DSpace Leadership Group and advises on policy instruments for research output management.
