The Research Activity Identifier (RAiD), a PID for Projects, was originally developed in Australia; other countries are now also beginning to implement and test national and regional RAiD services concretely: Canada, the Netherlands, and the US. This panel will provide updates from these three pilots, led by SURF in the Netherlands, Lyrasis and the San Diego Supercomputer Center in the United States, and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada and Canadian Research Knowledge Network in Canada. Panelists will share the current status of their RAiD pilots, including an overview of stakeholders involved, prominent use cases or workflows of focus, and plans for next steps.
This interactive session will highlight the progress and emerging insights from three national and regional RAiD (Research Activity Identifier) pilot initiatives led by organizations in the Netherlands, the United States, and Canada. Representatives from SURF, Lyrasis and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, will provide updates on their respective pilots, offering a comparative perspective on how RAiD is being explored and implemented across different research infrastructures.
Participants will learn about the current status of these RAiD service pilots, including the stakeholders and communities involved, key use cases and workflows being tested, and the technical or organizational approaches shaping each implementation. The discussion will also highlight lessons learned so far, opportunities for collaboration, and how RAiD may support improved coordination, transparency, and tracking of research activities across institutions and systems.
The session will conclude with reflections on next steps for each pilot and an interactive activity where participants will brainstorm and discuss in small groups the ways that their organizations could get involved or use RAiD to support research management, infrastructure integration, and persistent identification of research activities at scale.
This panel will be of interest to research infrastructure providers, research institution staff such as librarians, research administrators, or repository managers, funders, and others exploring persistent identifier ecosystems and research lifecycle integration.
Tristan Kuehn is Product Lead, Discovery Services at the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. Tristan manages Lunaris, the Alliance's Canadian data discovery service; serves as technical lead for the DataCite Canada Consortium; and serves as staff liaison for the Alliance's Discovery and Metadata Expert Group.
Sheila Rabun has worked in the academic library field since 2010, with a focus on digital workflows, agile project management, communicating technical information to diverse audiences, and advocating for interoperability in cultural heritage, research, and scholarly communication ecosystems. In her current role at Lyrasis, Sheila manages the ORCID US Community and the Lyrasis DataCite US Community, working with non-profit organizations across the US to leverage open persistent identifiers and shared open standards to make research and scholarly content more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
John Aspler graduated from McGill University with a PhD in Neuroscience. Although originally interested in music cognition, his exposure to a stream of problematic neuroscience-related news publications both cultivated and cemented in him an interest in improving public scientific literacy. John pursued his research at McGill University and the Pragmatic Health Ethics Research Unit, where he worked on several projects about the media discourse surrounding people with neurodevelopmental disabilities (e.g., fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). He is also Manager, Canadian Persistent Identifier Community / Gestionnaire, Communauté canadienne des identifiants pérennes at CRKN-RCDR.
