Opening and keynote by Mpho Tutu van Furth
11-11-2025 , Plenaire zaal

In the opening session of the SURF Onderwijsdagen, the South African Anglican priest Mpho Tutu van Furth will be our keynote speaker.

Mpho Tutu van Furth promotes the philosophy of ‘ubuntu’, which gives people insight into themselves and their connection with others. The word literally means ‘humanity’. Ubuntu assumes that a person is only a person through other people. In other words, we are only human in relation to other people. Our humanity is intertwined, and every tear in the fabric of our connectedness must be repaired so that we can all be whole. It forms the basis of who we are.

At the SURF Onderwijsdagen Tutu van Furth will address how this philosophy can help us find the right balance between autonomy, our own identities (as a person but also as an institution) and cooperation.

Mpho Tutu van Furth is a Anglican priest, writer, artist and activist. She is the daughter of Archbishop, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu (1931-2021) and grew up in apartheid South Africa.
