How do you put digital autonomy into practice in education? TU/e views digital autonomy as a jigsaw puzzle made up of several interlinked pieces: taking ownership of IP, a quest for open standards, establishing public-private partnerships, and data. In this session, we will focus on one piece of the puzzle: taking control of your own data.
At present, our focus is very much on ensuring compliance (privacy/security) is properly managed. However, taking control of data requires more than just guidelines for secure use. The organisation must take the tools into its own hands to bring data together itself and set standards for how suppliers may gain access. If an organisation were to relinquish this control, every supplier would create its own data foundation.
To counter this, TU/e is working on a single repository for all data and a standardised method for suppliers to connect. In this model, the supplier no longer holds our data, but uses it. This enhances our innovative capacity, prevents data fragmentation and reduces dependence on individual suppliers. At the same time, this raises new questions: What standards are needed to exchange data sustainably and in accordance with the principles of interoperability? How can suppliers connect to institutional data platforms without institutions losing control?
In this session, we will share our vision, architectural choices, data governance plans and initial results. We will discuss the role of data infrastructure and standardisation as a key component of digital autonomy in education. This session is aimed at educational innovators, policy officers, information managers, IT architects, data stewards and privacy officers. It will also be of interest to suppliers providing services based on educational data, such as Learning Analytics or AI providers.
