Across Dutch higher education, institutions are developing their own prompt collections, examples and AI support resources. While these initiatives are valuable, they often address similar challenges and duplicate effort. What if we could learn from each other and build something together?
The National Prompt Library was launched to explore this question. The initiative brings together institutions to create a shared collection of high-quality prompts and practical AI resources for higher education. Since its launch, the project has developed a first MVP, a shared prompt template, and quality review criteria to support the curation and sustainable growth of the library. However, building a prompt library turned out to be about much more than collecting prompts. Questions around quality assurance, governance, sustainability, ownership and community engagement quickly became just as important as the content itself.
In this interactive workshop, colleagues from Maastricht University and Erasmus University Rotterdam will share the lessons learned from developing both the content and the vision of the National Prompt Library. Participants will gain insight into the choices, successes and dilemmas encountered while creating a shared resource across institutions. How do you determine what makes a prompt worth sharing? How do you balance openness with quality? How do you create a review process that is both practical and trustworthy? And what does it take to build a resource that institutions are willing to contribute to, use and help sustain?
Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the project's first results and contribute their own perspectives on the future of the initiative. Through discussion and collaborative activities, we will explore what educators, educational developers and innovation professionals need from a shared AI resource and how the sector can work together to build and maintain it.
Whether you are already experimenting with prompt libraries or are curious about collaborative approaches to AI in education, this session offers practical insights, concrete examples and opportunities to contribute to a growing national initiative.

Katja Shcherbakova is Project Leader Digital Literacy & AI for Educators at Maastricht University. She leads the development of a university-wide digital literacy ecosystem that connects digital and AI literacy, professional development, teaching qualifications, and educational support. Working across faculties and support units, she focuses on helping educators navigate the opportunities and challenges of teaching in an increasingly digital and AI-rich world. Katja also contributes to national initiatives on digital and AI literacy in higher education.
