How can we still be sure that submitted work genuinely reflects a student’s understanding? This question is becoming increasingly pressing as generative AI gets better and better at producing essays, programming work, reports and even entire assignments. Many institutions are looking for ways to safeguard academic integrity, but existing solutions often prove inadequate. AI detection is unreliable, online proctoring raises privacy and trust issues, and traditional exams often undermine authentic and meaningful learning.
At the same time, research increasingly points to oral assessment as one of the most effective ways to gain a genuine insight into students’ understanding, reasoning and ownership of the subject matter. The challenge? Many lecturers view oral assessment as pedagogically sound, but organisationally difficult to scale.
In this interactive session, Inholland University of Applied Sciences and FeedbackFruits will explore how AI can actually help make oral assessment scalable, without compromising on the quality of teaching or professional assessment. Drawing on practical experience from prototype testing and a pilot project, Jelle Scheurleer, a researcher and lecturer at Inholland, will highlight the challenges institutions face regarding assurance of learning and how oral assessment can play a role in this.
Participants will be introduced to a new approach in which students prepare using AI-driven practice interviews, explain their work orally through structured reflections, and lecturers receive support in assessing large numbers of students. The focus is not on the technology itself, but on the question of how we can maintain meaningful assessment at a time when AI is increasingly capable of taking over cognitive tasks.
During the session, we will discuss questions such as:
- How do you ensure quality assurance in the AI era?
- When is oral assessment the right approach?
- How do you prevent an increased workload for lecturers?
- What role can AI play without replacing the lecturer’s professional judgement?
- What have we learnt from the initial pilot studies and validation tests involving students and lecturers?
Participants will leave the session with concrete practical examples, design principles and insights to enable them to use oral assessment effectively and at scale within their own educational context.
Oral assessment is the most robust form of learning assurance in the AI era and, with the right support, can be implemented on a large scale.
