Does this sound familiar? Students hand in work that looks good, but you’re not sure whether they actually understand it. Generative AI makes it easier than ever to produce output without actually mastering the subject matter. How do you break out of that ‘autopilot’ mode without ending up in a culture of surveillance? In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to KRITIKOS, an open-source browser extension that doesn’t give students answers, but asks critical questions the moment they use AI.
KRITIKOS is a digital Socratic dialogue partner, developed by Utrecht University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), students, lecturers and researchers specialising in educational science, ICT and ethics. As soon as a student opens an AI tool such as ChatGPT, KRITIKOS appears with a targeted question: “Why are you using AI right now?” This encourages the student to reflect on their own learning process at precisely the moment it matters, rather than retrospectively as a compulsory exercise. All reflection data remains local; there is no lecturer dashboard and no central database. Privacy here is not a disclaimer, but a design choice.
In the workshop, you’ll get hands-on: you’ll install KRITIKOS, complete a short AI task and experience what it feels like when a tool confronts you with the question of why you do what you do. You’ll then analyse the resulting reflective dialogues in small groups and explore how to apply this in your own teaching practice. You’ll conclude with a discussion about the balance between guidance and monitoring, and the ethical choices behind them.
You’ll go home with three key takeaways: first-hand experience of how educational AI differs from generic AI; an understanding of the design principles behind KRITIKOS (Value Sensitive Design, local-first architecture); and concrete ideas for integrating KRITIKOS into your own course.
This session is intended for lecturers, educational designers, policymakers and anyone seeking a practical, ethically sound way to guide students in their use of AI. No prior technical knowledge is required, but you will need a laptop with the Chromium browser.
Whether students continue to learn does not depend on whether they use AI, but on how consciously they do so and whether they actively take control of their learning process.
Josien Boetje is onderzoeker en lerarenopleider op het gebied van digitale informatievaardigheden en kritische AI‑geletterdheid. Ze is initiatiefnemer en kernonderzoeker van CARE (Critical AI in Research and Education), uitgeroepen tot onderzoeksteam van het jaar 2025. In haar werk verbindt zij wetenschappelijke inzichten met de dagelijkse onderwijspraktijk. Via empirisch onderzoek bestudeert zij hoe digitale technologie het leren kan versterken, met specifieke aandacht voor digitale agency en bewuste keuzes in AI‑gebruik. Josien maakt haar kennis actief toegankelijk voor docenten en leerlingen via onderwijsvideo’s, blogs en de podcast DigiSnacks, waarin zij laat zien hoe digitale geletterdheid concreet geïntegreerd kan worden in vaklessen.
Ik werk op het snijvlak van pedagogiek, technologie en samenleving. Met ervaring in zowel onderwijs als onderzoek zet ik me in voor gelijke kansen en digitale rechtvaardigheid. Ik ontwikkel werkvormen, geef workshops en onderzoek hoe mediawijsheid en kritische AI-geletterdheid kunnen worden bevorderd in onderwijs en publieke dienstverlening. Technologie is voor mij pas waardevol als ze bijdraagt aan menselijkheid en verbinding.
