During the workshop, participants step into one of four future scenarios for learning, based on the archetypes of Growth, Collapse, Transformation and Discipline. Each scenario offers a unique perspective on how education might develop and invites participants to immerse themselves in that world and explore its implications.
Building on this immersive start, participants create what is known as a ‘future artefact’: a tangible object that does not yet exist today, but is credible within the chosen future scenario. Such artefacts are often subtle yet powerful signals of change. Consider, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic, during which objects such as social distancing markers or hand-washing instructions suddenly became part of everyday life. Before that, they did not exist in that form, but they quickly became recognisable symbols of that particular period. In a similar way, participants design an object that could become characteristic of future educational practice.
This creative and hands-on approach encourages participants to think more broadly about the future. Designing an artefact requires them not only to consider technology or teaching methods, but also the social, cultural and emotional aspects of learning. It helps them to move beyond abstract ideas and imagine what the future will look like, feel like and function like in everyday life. This deepens their understanding of the scenario and stimulates discussions about which futures are desirable and which are not.
