SURF Research Day 2024

Panel: Making waves in open science education
05-30, 11:30–12:20 (Europe/Amsterdam), Hoog vuur

What is the best way to learn open science practices and how might we implement it more widely?

While open science practices are spreading across disciplines and various stages of research projects, many of us are still learning the required skill “on the job”. Is that favorable? In this panel we will explore the growing realm of open science education. Several educational resources and trainings have been designed to catalyse a shift in the research community's approach to themes such as data sharing, preregistration, open access, and more. Understanding the multifaceted challenges that researchers encounter in adopting open science practices is crucial. Are extracurricular trainings sufficient for gaining the required open science skill, or should they be included in the core curriculum at the university?

This panel will delve into these dilemmas, ranging from the infrastructural to the cultural. We explore the current struggles and possibilities of open science education. Our panelists, representing diverse perspectives within the world of open science—a data steward, researcher, project and community manager, and data expert—will engage in an interactive discussion with the audience and the moderator. They will share insights from their respective areas, addressing the potential of open science education to foster a more inclusive, collaborative, and innovative research landscape.

This conversation aims to not only shed light on the challenges faced but also to chart a course towards a more open, equitable, and robust future in scientific inquiry. Join us in exploring what avenues are needed to implement such a core skillset within higher education, paving the way for a generation of researchers empowered by the principles of open science.

The panelists are:
- Maria Vivas Romero (Universiteit Maastricht)
- Maura Burke (Universiteit Utrecht)
- Curtis Sharma (4TU & TU Delft)
- Rene van Horik (DANS)

Moderator of the panel is Sanli Faez, associate professor at UU
